DIY Chalkboard Fireplace

My main apartment requirements both in San Francisco and now New York have always been that my living space has to have plenty of natural light and a touch of character. Whether it be exposed brick, a view, or decorative molding, I need something a little quirky. With my tendency to be a homebody, blank walls simply drive me crazy. We really lucked out with our current space because it has two huge windows, brick walls and a decorative fireplace which really adds to the coziness and charm.

{Before}

While I love our little marble faux fireplace, I struggled with how to go about filling that slightly awkward space. I first filled it with candles and books and then later with shoes and magazines, but both didn't feel quite right. Krystal recently gave me the idea to paint the inside with chalkboard paint, and it was the perfect finishing touch!

I painted two coats of Benjamin Moore chalkboard paint then went to town drawing an early Halloween scene.

{After}

Note: I think you'll be happy to know that I've since added a ghost and a couple bats to my picture.

Such a cute idea!! I'm moving into a place that actually has a fireplace and I've never had one before. I was thinking of filling mine with candles.

I absolutely love this!!! I completely agree with you on both requirements. Natural light is non-negotiable, and a touch of character is necessary, though not quite as specific.

What a cool idea with the paint! I didnt even know they had chalkboard paint!

Alicia you are a certified DIY queen! I love this for several reasons.Long ago I turned a piece of plywood into a chalkboard for my kitcken recipes and love it and also because I love the unconventional use of the fireplace you have created! Keep sharing these DIY's with us, before we know it you will be telling us you have a DIY book coming out :) Wouldn't that be exciting :) Question, was the hubs in on this DIY or was it like SURPRISE honey, look what I did when he came home?

@Amber - aww, you're so sweet! And yes it actually was a surprise... he came home to this holiday themed mural and chalkboard wall. Although he agreed that the solid black background of the fireplace needed to be covered. ;)
