This weekend marks the end of summer for the husband and I (and the start of a new adventure). School starts next week and I'll be tagging along while my guy finishes up his final year of graduate school at Cornell. I'm sad to be leaving my friends in San Francisco and family in Northern California, but looking forward to an exciting change and to finally be in the same state as my guy.
If you've lived in Upstate New York (or the east coast) I'd love any recommendations / must go or eats! We're hoping to travel and experience as much as we can this next year!
PS: I'll be in Manhattan often so I also welcome those recs too!

Good luck! I know how you feel, my husband and I were apart for a few years while he was in grad school and I was in LA, until I moved out to be with him. You'll have so much fun exploring a new area and being together. Can't wait to see the fun things you find!
Good luck with the move Alicia. If you're ever in DC, let me know and I will send you a list of places to go. :)
Alicia, best of luck for your new adventure! I'm sure it will be great and I cannot wait to read your posts on NY...

Welcome to the east coast!
Yayyy!!! Good luck with the move!!
I'm in CT, but I'm not really sure what there is to do around here except for Lake Compounce or Mystic Aquarium/Seaport, haha....well, there is other stuff, but I can't think of it at the moment

You MUST go to the racetrack in Saratoga Springs, NY! Even if you're not into horse racing/betting I think you'd like the event of it all. Saratoga is very historic and people come up for the races from all over. I think it's open through labor day weekend and then that's it!
Ithaca is so beautiful. Go for a hike at Robert. H. Treman then lunch at the Ithaca Bakery on Meadow St. Take a walk around the commons and head over to my favorite boutique Some Girls. Have a margarita or sangria at Viva. Don't forget to try lunch or dinner at the Moosewood. Rent kayaks and tour around the lake, I love to head up the streams and portage over to the little falls. Also Taughannock Falls right outside of Ithaca is a must. Take a wine tour of Cayuga and Seneca, and Keuka Lakes. Fall is the most amazing time of year out here. You will love it!
Good luck with everything! Will you be living upstate near Cornell? Ithaca's a very cute town unfortunately I don't know much around there though. If you need any tips for NYC or want a tour guide let me know!! I'm around.

Awe! You will love NY. I'm originally from NJ and really miss the east coast. Have a safe trip! Cant wait to see all of your pics in the big city! xx www.casualglamorous.com
Good luck with the move! As for NYC recommendations, I'd say Cafe Grumpy in Chelsea for coffee, Palma in the West Village for delicious Italian in the most charming restaurant ever, the Madison Square Park Shake Shack for amazing burgers, and the new High Line Park for a totally different view of the city!

Fall is amazing in that part of New York. A trip to any of the Finger Lakes Wineries is a must! They are all wonderful.
it's good to see you feeling better and up and at 'em with all the goodies from your last post.

I just found your blog a few months ago and absolutely love it!
I'm actually from Upstate NY! I grew up in Albany and went to college out towards Rochester so I know all of Upstate pretty darn well! You're moving at a wonderful time...there is literally no better place than Upstate NY in Fall. It's one of the most beautiful places in my opinion! Like everyone has said, the Finger Lakes are a wonderful region with great wineries, and Lake George is also a beautiful place to explore as well!
I actually just moved to Manhattan this summer so I'm looking for great NYC places to explore too :)
Good luck with the move!
I went to Ithaca College so I am going to give you the run down.
Stellas in college town if you wnat a really good meal with great cocktails.

Best of luck with your move!
If you have time before you leave town, I spotted this blouse bit.ly/mYZAIp at Loehmann's yesterday and thought of you. I think it was $80 (and look for a coupon if you go).
Bon voyage, gorgeous-I know this new adventure is going to be wonderful, and those gorgeous furs will be put to good use!
I went to school in Westchester county and basically any town along the Hudson River is beautiful. They have a lot of winerys/ B&Bs. Obviously so much to suggest about the city but definitely the Highline, Rubirosa, Eataly, etc.
Try the Brewster Inn in Cazenovia, NY - beautiful setting right on the lake and the food is amazing!
Congrats! I grew up in upstate, and now have a lake house about half an hour north of you on Cayuga in Aurora, NY.
You musttttttttttt take a day and travel up to the mackenzie childs barn where they make ALL of their stuff. It's about a half hour north of ithaca. Check it out online if you are not familiar. It's like being in Alice in Wonderland! Then head over to the Aurora Inn for brunch or dinner. Fargo is right across the street from there and is great for burgers.
Favorite winery on Cayuga is definitely Sheldrake Point. Great wine, great food, and great views!
Let me know if you need/would like more suggstions...I know the area very well :)
Best of Luck on your new adventure! Travel Safe.
Go check out the Brooklyn Flea Market! You will looove it.

,,,welcome to the east coast!,,,i'm originally from the west coast,, moved in 2009 to DC and love it!,,,ithaca is beautiful, breathe it all in and enjoy your new adventures,,,
Yay! Ithaca is the best! I went to Cornell for undergrad and absolutely loved it. You are getting there just in time because Fall is just BEAUTIFUL up there. My recommendations are visiting the wineries, CTB for fantastic sandwiches, Maxi's Supper Club for a taste of New Orleans, the Lost Dog Cafe and of course the Cornell Dairy for delicious ice cream! Best of luck on your new adventure!
xxkristin
Good Luck. The boy and I are headed to upstate in December, my favorite time of year there. Not really :)
I bet your husband has great friends and you will both have a wonderful time!
That's so exciting! And so much fun scooting between the different coasts... I can't wait to see the east coast photos! xx
p.s I think Andy from the Office ruined Cornell for me, I can't hear the name without thinking of him! Haha but that is so exciting and amazing for your hubs, I hope the year goes wonderfully!
best wishes on the new adventure in your life! have fun starting a new chapter!

A day in Skaneatles and dinner at Rosalie's Cucina in Skaneatles is a must during your time there!
Best of luck with your big move! I recently moved across the country to NYC, and it truly is an adventure!
When in Manhattan:
- shop in Soho for the high-end names and on 5th ave (near union square) for the chain stores - it's less crowded than uptown and 34th st.!
- the lower east side is full of great bars and Chinatown really has lots of treasures! I hear a place called Vanessa's Dumplings is a must. You can find a meal for two there for under $10 - unheard of in NYC!
- Brooklyn, Brooklyn BROOKLYN! So much great shopping, and the food is worth the "trip". Check out the Smorgsboard on Saturdays in Williamsburg - it's a weekly food festival. It's in the same location as the Brooklyn flea.
Don't forget, you won't be too far from Canada. A trip to Montreal is great for the weekend!
You will love NY! It's not SF, but lovely all on it's own :)
Cheers!

best of luck Alicia, exciting changes!
I went to Cornell for undergrad and I love/miss ithaca so much! Here are my suggestions:
-Wineries: Red Cat, Wagner, Three Brothers (three different themed wine rooms and a beer barn too)
-Collegetown restaurants:
--The Nines: DELICIOUS pizza, live music, can eat outside when it is nice outside (rarely, haha)
--Collegetown Bagels: must-see for anyone visiting ithaca. they have multiple locations but this one is the best. they have a liquor license so many people will get a carafe of sangria and hang out here for hours!
--Souvlaki House: BEST greek salad, hearty greek/italian food, wine bottles are really cheap here
--Aladdin's: my personal favorite; healthy greek food and inexpensive. Known for salad entrees and pastas
--Stella's: "Upscale", swanky place to eat that is one part bar/sit down restaurant and one part cafe/coffeehouse. unique cocktails and coffee drinks
The Commons and Beyond:
--Mate Factory: cute little hippie-ish place that has handcrafted coffee drinks and decently good organic/veggie friendly food
--Viva, Garcia's: delicious mexican food. Garcia's is definitely greasier than Viva but both good!
--The Heights, John Thomas: two of the nicest/most expensive restaurants in ithaca. the chocolate lava cake at the heights is to die for
Hope this helped! You guys will have the best time
Welcome to the east coast. Let's hope the winter is more forgiving this winter!
Oh wow, that is exciting! I live in the Ithaca area, and boy do I have some recommendations for you!
- The Ithaca Farmers Market is the BEST! It takes place in a pavilion right on the water, and is one of my favorite places to visit. There are a wide variety of local farmers and artisans, beautiful fresh flowers, and tasty food!
- Found (http://www.foundinithaca.com) is a beautifully curated antique/vintage shop. It is a huge warehouse-like building full of unique goodies. They host a flea market once a month too.
- Petrune is a really cute clothing store on the commons – it is a mix of vintage and modern.
- The Ale House is my favorite place for happy hour, or to grab a casual dinner. They have a wide selection of draught beers that are constantly rotating.
- Ithaca Bakery (also associated with Collegetown Bagels) is great for breakfast/lunch, and coffee. They have a few locations around Ithaca. They have the best bagels in town.
- Simeon's is another one of my favorite restaurants on the commons – very tasty and reasonably priced.
Before I moved to Ithaca I worked in NYC, so I have a few city recommendations as well…
- Chelsea Market is a must see. It has the feel of an indoor farmer’s market – so many amazing bakeries, restaurants, and little shops.
- Heartland Brewery has excellent food and a menu full of craft beers which are brewed on site. They have a few different Manhattan locations.
- Vynl is a funky little restaurant in Chelsea. The décor is retro inspired and a lot of fun!
Best of luck with the East Coast transition. Ithaca is a very unique place – I love living here, and hope you enjoy your time here as well!
you must visit saratoga springs if you can! it's BEAUTIFUL in the fall, what with the leaves changing and the promise of fresh, crisp air. a few places of note (the town is famous for its racetrack; the population swells in the summer season than quiets back down in the fall as skidmore students arrive):
putnam market (to die for sandwiches)
any and all of the bars along caroline street (if you like dives, you'll DA's, or T&L, which stands for the tin and lint).
shop till you drop! tons of cute boutiques in the downtown
mrs. london's bakery (incredible, all of it)
uncommon bagels (these rival NYC bagels)
there's tons more in this cute downtown, and they also get a lot of great concerts, so consider timing your trip with a show you want to see.
i now live in NYC, but upstate NY holds a big part of my heart captive...enjoy!
I just discovered your blog today (don't know how I didn't find it sooner because I LOVE cheetah print) and I go to Cornell!! I thought I was going crazy when I saw you just moved here to Ithaca! Anyways, Ithaca really is beautiful and I hope you enjoy it while you're here.
I highly recommend Moosewood for great vegetarian food and the Commons has some cute little stores. There's not really much (if any) high end shopping available, but I guess that's what NYC is for!
@KelseyA - Too funny - so glad you stumbled upon my blog! ;) I will definitely check out Moosewood and the Commons soon - thanks for the tips!
